More than 700 students will put down their books and pick up rakes and gardening tools this Saturday for the SGA’s 12th annual Big Event.

Big Event is a community service event that is held every spring where students sign up to clean up yards and make repairs on homes in the community within a five mile radius of SU.

The event is comparable to I Love Salisbury, which is hosted in the fall and focuses on cleaning up nonprofit organizations like schools in the area, rather than residential homes.

Samantha Allen, a junior and biology major, is the Vice President of External Affairs for the SGA. She said that there are over 700 people signed up for the event, and while people usually drop out at the last minute, this is a record number of participants for Big Event.

Allen also said that the goal of Big Event is to give back and to create better ties between the university and the community, and to bring everyone together.

“A lot of the people we do help out have either physical needs or have recently lost someone, so we can provide emotional support for them which is really nice,” she said.

The event also counts as a Recognized Event for RSO’s looking to maintain their recognition status with the SGA.

Participants will meet at 10 a.m. in Red Square on Saturday, according to the SGA website. For those who have not signed up but want to participate in the event, registration starts at 9:30 a.m.
