Being stuck inside on a nice spring day is the last thing most college students want.
Here are some affordable and local activities in or around the ‘Bury that anyone can do when boredom strikes this spring.
1. Take a walk through Pemberton Historical Park
Pemberton Park is located along the Wicomico River and offers six nature trails perfect for hiking or running on a sunny day. The 262-acre park is open to visitors from sunrise to sunset and holds river otter paddle excursions during the spring and summer.
2. Jam out at 1st Saturday
Different musical guests will perform downtown on the first Saturday of each month this spring and summer. The city aims to promote community involvement and local businesses through this free monthly concert.
3. Find fresh food at the farmer’s market
Shore Fresh Growers will hold a farmer’s market on East Market Street from 8am to 12pm starting in May. Satisfy a sweet tooth with fresh baked goods, jams and jellies or pick from locally grown fruits and vegetables. The market also offers flowers and fresh eggs.
4. Relieve Stress with puppy therapy
Volunteer as a dog walker Tuesday through Saturday at the Wicomico County Humane Society in East Salisbury. Just walk in, sign up and you will be assigned a dog to walk. Walking dogs can relieve stress students may be feeling toward the end of the year, and can be especially therapeutic if one is missing a canine companion at home.
5. Visit the Salisbury Zoo
Can’t get enough of animals? Swing by the Salisbury Zoo. At no cost of admission, the zoo is open every day of the year (except for Christmas and Thanksgiving Day) from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The zoo contains enclosures for animal species native to North, Central and South America.
6. Spend the weekend at Spring Fest
Experience live music, food and crafts at Spring Fest in Ocean City from May 5 to 8. Tickets are being sold to see Sara Evans, Collective Soul or one of the other many free concerts each day.
7. Eat Pork in the Park
Visit Winterplace Park for Pork in the Park on April 23 and 24 for live music, craft vendors and food. Admission is $3 and attendees can vote for their favorite wings and pork, or take a ride in a hot air balloon.
8. Take a break at the beach
When a study break is necessary, head to Ocean City for some rest and relaxation. Only 40 minutes away, it’s an easy drive from campus for a quick getaway.
9. Run a 5K
Participating in a 5K can be a great source of exercise and an excuse to get outside on a nice spring day, especially if you run with a friend or form a team. There are local 5K’s coming up in Salisbury such as the Phi-K run hosted by SU sorority Phi Mu on April 10 and the annual Zoo Stampede 5K on April 16 hosted by the Salisbury Zoo.
10. Cheer on the Shorebirds
The Delmarva Shorebirds are a minor league baseball team based in Salisbury, and are an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. The Shorebirds host games at the Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Hobbs Road regularly throughout the spring, and there are firework nights, promotional nights and giveaways almost every weekend.
