Salisbury University’s Student Organization for Activity Planning announced that Jason Derulo will be the headlining act at Gull Fest on May 1st with tickets going on sale in mid April.
Local Salisbury band Breakfast was also revealed to be the opening act. The second head act has yet to be determined.
“We’re still working on it,” SOAP Concert Chair Liana Ramos-Izquierdo said.”There were contract issues in regards to the other opener.”
The artist names were released after SU Idol, a singing competition put together by SOAP.
Due to budget cuts, SOAP was limited to hiring two artists this year as opposed to the three the school hosted last year. To combat this, the organization collaborated with WXSU Student Radio on a battle of the bands event that took place in the fall. Breakfast won and SOAP asked if they would be interested in being an opening act for Gull Fest.
Breakfast vocalist Kobi Boateng said that they are excited for the opportunity to play with professional acts. Up until recently, they were unsure if they were going to have the opportunity to perform.
“SOAP really wanted us to play, but that wasn’t part of the issue,” Boateng said. “The problem is that the headlining artists had to agree to have us open up for them.”
SOAP will eventually announce the second artist, but can’t confirm any specific time.
“We really worked hard to pull this off,”Ramos-Izquierdo said. “Jason Derulo appeals to a wide range of people so he fits really well.”
