Last night through this morning, hundreds gathered on the Salisbury University campus for the annual Relay for Life in order to raise money for cancer research, in total pulling together $107,151.56.

In order to raise money, students and staff formed relay teams around friend and colleague groups, as well as around registered student organizations and raised money for their team.

Likewise, RSOs set up tables at the actual event selling coffee, baked goods, hot dogs and hamburgers, hosting competitions, painting faces, giving henna tattoos and many other competitions, all of which raised money for cancer research.

Teams also entered faux drag queen contestants in a faux drag show in which relay participants could give money to the one they felt looked the best, or the most outrageous.

“I love the fact that the entire campus comes together to raise money and awareness for such a good cause (and) walking around seeing the creativity and hard work of everyone involved,” junior Brooklyn Galloway said.

In one of the most infamous and emotionally evocative annual moments of Relay for Life, contestants set up luminaria candles around the track both immortalizing those who have passed away from cancer and honoring those still fighting.

Last year’s donations totaled over $100,000 as well.

Since 2002, Salisbury University’s Relay For Life has raised over $1 million for the American Cancer Society and last year, SU received the Excellence in Student Service Group Award and the ACS South Atlantic Division Top Collegiate Fundraising Award.

“Thank you so much to all our teams and participants,” Relay for Life of SU tweeted this morning. “We couldn’t have done this without all of you.”
